common good
noun
-
The benefit or interests of all; that which benefits society as a whole, in contrast to the private good of individuals and sections of society; that which is shared by and beneficial to all or most members of a given community
“In spite of our differences, we shall work for the common good”
Common Good NW takes its name from the concept of the universal “common good”; places, resources, and institutions that members of a community agree are necessary to satisfy certain interests they share in common. This can be a hospital, a homeless shelter, a food bank, or an animal rescue. The nonprofit sector is based on the idea that people can come together for the common good in order to transform their shared beliefs and hopes into action to improve the lives of others.
Three essential elements of the common good are:
-
respect for the individual (human or animal)
-
the social well-being and development of the group
-
peace, safety, and security
“Don’t wait for government and the bureaucracies to fix things. Get in there and decide what difference you can make. Figure out your greatest capacity to help or to leverage change, commit resources and yourself and your team and get working on it.” - Bill Clinton
